How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
Our complete project consists of the main media which is a film trailer and two ancillary texts; a website and a poster, they come together to make a promotional package for our Mod inspired youth culture film named Fluoxetine. Our ancillary products complement our main product well; and I believe that they are all combined to provide an effective outcome. All the products continue to represent the youth culture genre, they all have different parts from each but together they unify well with similar and same features.
The main feature that we chose to keep the same throughout was our title font and the features surrounding it. We used “Dafont.com” to generate a suitable style, we chose “Mouse Deco” as it resembled the typography that The Beatles, The Who and other Mod culture bands used within their logo as well as their promotional packages. Even though we changed the colour of the title throughout the ancillary tasks, we kept the same font and shading to keep continuity. We decided to do this as we looked at case studies such as The Beatles and The Killers as their logo and their typography has become iconic as it doesn’t change throughout their career and it doesn’t differ from the merchandise it is on. On the “o” of fluoxetine we inserted the Mod symbol on top, this instantly connects the audience to the Mod references also, as it is the only colour in both the main project and website design it is more iconic.
Our main media text is a teaser trailer therefore only giving hint of the storyline; however it gives enough information for the genre, the mod inspiration and the style to be clear. This is a feature we tried to mimic throughout our ancillary tasks. Our poster is very minimalistic; its plain white background with two black and white pills in the center is plain but effective. With audience feedback they told us that it’s seen as intriguing and mysterious. As we used two drugs as the image it also makes it controversial and provocative, another feature that we replicated throughout. On our website we have a background film that repeats, it is not the trailer but includes exciting, “best bits” of the movie, however some of these clips include drug taking, smoking, fights and sexual references. This shows that the combination of our main product and ancillary task to be a success as it has combining features.
The tag line is another feature that is reflected throughout all of the media texts. “A boy’s journey to find himself through a different era” is one of the only explicit hints to the storyline and plot of the film, the rest of the features are only used as hints towards the plot. In the trailer it is the first text we see so therefore memorable, therefore we decided to make sure that the tagline was made important in our ancillary tasks. For the poster it is centralized and at the top, as the poster is so simple it is automatically given more status. The website has the tagline in the middle, center of the front page; over the background video that is constantly playing this again shows the importance of the tagline. As the tagline is important in all three sections it unites the three together.
On our website we also have links to our social networking site links introduce fans to each other as well as being able to find out more about the film and we are making it. Our social networking sites are filled with interactive questions and pictures this includes the target audience into the making and development. On our social network sites there are links to our trailer and pictures of our posters, so all interlinking the features into one.
To conclude I believe that our three products come together well to create a promotional package that represents our film well.
